My name is Ashley Nguyen, and I am a senior at Frisco Liberty High School. For the past eleven years, I have been a competitive swimmer at both the club and high school level. The lessons that I have learned in swimming extend far beyond my time in the pool. Perseverance, determination, commitment, and courage—those things are real. The desire to achieve my goals drives me. And the will to succeed—it’s everything. As I move on towards bigger and better challenges, I have learned that it is imperative to be passionate, show dedication, and maintain excellence, in order to attain a high level of achievement. For it is passion that will guide me down a path of success, dedication that will push me to achieve my goals, and excellence that will distinguish me apart from others. With my future in sight, I aim to become a surgeon as worthy as those who have come before me, yet remain humbled and grateful for the experiences that will ultimately help me achieve my goals.

I have always pictured myself becoming a doctor. I remember dressing up as a one for Halloween when I was seven or eight, wearing my own special lab coat that my mommy embroidered "Dr. Nguyen" on along with a bright pink stethoscope and a pair of scrubs. At the time, I had no idea what kind of doctor I wanted to be, but I knew I wanted to have an impact on other's lives.

For the past year and a half, I have been studying Pediatric Cardiothoracic Surgery under the mentorship of Dr. Kristine Guleserian. How does one go from wanting to be a doctor to wanting to become a pediatric heart surgeon? This interest obviously developed over a great length of time. I would be lying if I said that television didn't have at least a minuscule role in my passion for this topic. While the various medical dramas televised aren't the most accurate depictions of life as a doctor, they served as a starting point for me. It sparked my interest. The passion blossomed from there. I started doing some research about the topic and found it truly fascinating.
